Camping Ministries

Camping ministries have proven to be successful in the South African context. Children and teenagers enjoy going to camp to be involved in athletic, computer, leadership, and team based activities. Many have trusted Christ as Lord and Saviour during these camping experiences. In addition, the time away from the distractions of home and township life provides a context where many have deepened their walk with the Lord.

There is a great need in the South African public school system for leadership development. Most schools emphasize leadership at both the upper primary (grades 6-7) and at the upper high school (grades 11-12) levels. These schools do not have the facilities to provide the training and therefore they send their students to camps for both leadership and team development. The disadvantaged schools generally have a Christian ethos and are eager to send their students to a Christian camp. We could potentially provide training from a Christian perspective for thousands of students. We anticipate the Lord saving some of these students!

We would also promote various types of camps for young adults: wilderness, leadership and team building, skills development, music, etc. These camps would be promoted in local churches as well as at universities. We are praying that God would save some of those who attend.

We would organize family camps as well as various types of retreats for churches: men, women, discipleship, speciality workshops, etc.

We are praying that the Lord will provide a facility where this type of training may be conducted. The camps could be run year round. The winters in Pietermaritzburg are relatively mild: 9-20 degrees Celsius (50-68 degrees Fahrenheit). In addition, we need indviduals who are passionate about working with children and teenagers in a camp context.

Those who have been saved as a result of these types of outreaches and have completed high school will be recruited for our GAP program. The teenagers and young adults from these camps together with those from fellowshipping churches would constitute the feeder program for our GAP year and church planter's course of study.
